Microsoft merencanakan peluncuran Windows 8 Release Preview pada minggu pertama bulan Juni 2012. Menyusul rilis Windows 8 Consumer Preview akhir Februari lalu. Hal ini diumumkan langsung oleh Presiden Microsoft Steven Sinofsky pada acara Windows 8 Dev Days yang berlangsung di Jepang.
This “release candidate” or Release Preview version follows the release on the “beta” or Consumer Preview version. The final version of Windows 8 is expected to be released in the holiday season of 2012 – and no one will be surprised if this happens in October.
Dengan demikian Windows 8 Release Preview merupakan versi Release Candidate (RC) dari sebuah sistem operasi yang mendekati final. Tentu saja Windows 8 Release Preview akan hadir dengan sejumlah fitur dan update terbaru. Windows 8 akan hadir dalam beberapa versi yaitu Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro dan Windows 8 RT bersama dengan Enterprise serta Emerging Market Edition.
